Try the rod before buying a lure
Mackerel is listed in the Forest Island default fish pool. The required tool is the Fishing Rod; the entry does not call for a Beginner Lure.
Gar and Pike are also listed in that default pool. Check these three names together if you are filling early Fishipedia gaps after spending most of your money on equipment.
Compare catches without mixing pools
Mackerel’s recorded base is 6 coins, slightly above Gar’s 5 and below Pike’s 12. This is a comparison of eligible species, not a way to choose which one bites next.
A Beginner Lure expands your Forest collection options, but Mackerel itself is not a reason to purchase one. Separate “need another species” from “need more sale money” before changing the setup.
