Privacy policy

The guide works without an account. Personal checklists stay in your browser, and personal checklists remain on your device. Advertising follows regional privacy settings; analytics are optional.

Updated October 14, 2026

Information stored on your device

The site uses browser localStorage for optional preferences and progress trackers:

  • htf-collector-v1 — creatures marked as collected.
  • htf-achievements-v1 — achievements marked as complete.
  • htf-beginner-departure — beginner departure checklist progress.
  • htf-island-route-v1 — checked tasks on the island route planner.
  • how-to-fish.bean-practice.v1 — the practice timer and saved route splits.
  • htf-analytics-consent-v1 — whether this browser accepted or declined optional analytics.
  • htf-advertising-consent-v1 — your separate choice about optional advertising.

The preference and progress values stay in your browser and are not sent to our server. You can remove them by clearing site data for this site in your browser.

Optional analytics

Google Analytics is disabled by default. Before you enable Google Analytics in Privacy settings, the site does not download the Google tag, send an analytics request or set an Analytics cookie. Declining keeps it off. The tag is also disabled on our pages.dev preview host.

If you accept, Google Analytics may process the page URL, referrer, browser and device details, interactions, and coarse location derived from connection data. It may set first-party cookies such as _ga to distinguish visits. We use these aggregate reports to understand which guides are useful and do not use them for behavioral advertising. Google advertising storage, ad user data, ad personalization and Google Signals remain disabled in the Analytics configuration.

Your choice is saved in this browser. Use Privacy settings in the footer at any time to change it; withdrawing consent stops the tag from loading on future pages and removes the Analytics cookies known to this site. You can also clear all site data in your browser. Google processes accepted Analytics data under its own privacy policy.

Advertising and regional choices

Adsterra ads help fund this free guide. Content pages can display a top banner, an advertisement between sections, a desktop sidebar and a native advertisement block near the footer. On phones, the compact top banner moves to a dismissible bottom position after you scroll. Formats are selected for the screen width; hidden desktop formats are not requested on mobile.

Our same-origin region check uses Cloudflare’s country classification and returns only whether a consent choice is required, without exposing your IP address or location to page scripts. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising waits for your choice. If the region cannot be determined, we also ask first. Elsewhere, advertising loads automatically unless you have opted out. Global Privacy Control and saved advertising refusals disable advertising in every region.

Use Privacy settings in the footer to manage advertising and analytics independently. An automatic advertising load does not count as consent to Google Analytics. Analytics remain off until you enable them. Ads are disabled on preview domains, legal pages and noindex pages. Below-the-fold placements load when approaching the screen.

When enabled, Adsterra and its advertising partners may receive your IP address, page URL, referrer, browser and device information, and may use cookies or similar identifiers to deliver, measure and personalize ads. See Adsterra’s privacy policy for its data practices. Ad content is supplied by third parties and is not an editorial recommendation.

You can withdraw advertising consent through Privacy settings in the footer. This removes the ad and prevents future ad loads. To remove existing advertising identifiers, use your browser’s cookie and site-data controls; we cannot delete third-party cookies from this domain. An ad’s close button hides that placement for the current page without changing your saved privacy choice.

The site has applied to Google AdSense. Its ownership verification metadata and ads.txt declaration do not load Google ads. Google ad serving is not currently enabled.

Server and Cloudflare data

Cloudflare may process limited request metadata such as IP address, user agent and security signals to deliver the site, prevent abuse and produce aggregate operational logs. We do not sell personal data.

Embedded media

YouTube content is loaded only after you press play and uses the youtube-nocookie.com domain. Once loaded, the media provider may process connection data under its own policy. Steam links open on Steam's domains.
